Check it out!

Robin Rhode

I have been doing research on 5 emerging contemporary artist over the course of the semester for one of my classes. Most of them are pretty strange, but I have really enjoyed learning about them. One of them that I have found to be particularly exciting is Robin Rhode. He is a South African artist who works mostly out of Berlin, Germany. He does a lot of performance and street art. His stuff is fascinating. If you have the chance you should check out some of his stuff!!

Westmont Senior Art Exhibition

The Westmont Senior Art Exhibition, "We Are Here", opened a few weeks ago. It was so neat to see the final products after watching several of them work on them throughout the semester. I was really impressed by a lot of the work and it was so fun to see it in the new museum. The displays were incredible and there was a huge variety of work which I appreciated. I really enjoyed Matt Shelton's sculptures. The tension in the pieces really draws you in -- it doesn't look like the chain should be able to stand upright. I got to talk to him about the process involved which was really neat to hear about.
Joel Phillip's pieces were astounding. I loved that they were life size. I was really impressed by how he got the  much detail and kept the pieces looking so clean with charcoal.
I also really enjoyed Jason's pieces. I may be a little biased, but I think they turned out so well, especially after being able to watch them from start to finish. I love the emotion and the incredible amount of detail and layering. It is fun to see all that you can do with digital art.
There were a lot more fantastic pieces in the show. If you haven't seen them yet make sure to get up to the Westmont Museum of Art by Saturday!!

Helvetica

A few weeks ago we watched Helvetica: A Documentary by Gary Huswit for class. It definitely makes you think twice about fonts you use and see every day. Prior to the film I didn't know anything about the font and I certainly didn't know how big of a deal it was. After seeing the film, you can't help but notice that the font is everywhere. It is incredible. Check it out and let me know what you think about it!

Westmont Polo

This was a project I did for Design last fall. The assignment was to do a sachplakat object poster. I played on the Westmont Women's team last year and thought it would be fun to do a poster for them.

Exit Through The Gift Shop

I watched this documentary a few months ago. It's quite fascinating. You should definitely check it out. http://www.banksyfilm.com/

At this point, I am still not quite sure how I feel about the documentary. I found the portrayal of street art and particularly that of Banksy and Shepard Fairey fascinating. Even though many see much of street art as disrespectful or irreverent, I think that this portrayal and the attitudes of many of the artists contradict that misconception. Banksy, in particular, despite his unconventional style and media, still has a respect for art and the art world. Mr. Brainwash, on the other hand, does not. I found his attitude toward art and his approach in general appalling. Like Banksy said, he would take some symbol or a play on another work of art and essentially run it into the ground. He would use it so much or present it in such a way that it became meaningless. I think he essentially took advantage of the public and make them believe that what he was doing was art. The most frustrating part of the whole thing is that he did it on purpose. The whole idea behind his title (MBW) was that he could brainwash people into accepting his work as art. Anyways, it was interesting. Let me know what you think about it if you watch it.

Pencil Shaving Font

This was another one of my projects for Publication Design. The assignment was to create a font out of found objects and then create a word with that font. I was sharpening all my color pencils a while ago and wished I had something do with them instead of throwing away. So when this project came up I was excited to be able to use all the shavings!

Katie Costello Concert Poster

Yet another project for Publication Design. The assignment was to create a concert poster. Katie Costello  a fairly new artist, but she has some great music.  You should definitely check her out!

The Dust of Africa

Ibis Stamp

This was a project I did for my Design class in the Fall of 2010. We were each given a different letter and we had to make a stamp with a graphic of an animal that started with that letter. I got the letter I and chose to do an Ibis (specifically an American White Ibis.)

Rift Valley Academy Advertisement

This is part one of our second to last project for Publication Design. The assignment was to create an advertisement about something we are passionate about. Rift Valley Academy is a missionary boarding school in Kenya that educates and cares for children of missionaries in over 23 countries in Africa. My parents have been working there for 23 years now. My dad is taking over as the superintendent of the school next year. I thought it would be fun to do an ad for RVA since they don't already have anything like that to promote the school. Enjoy!
